È passato un mese dal nostro rientro, ma mai come questa volta, sembra una vita fa, ora finalmente ho tempo di rispolverarne i ricordi.
Quest’anno avevamo voglia di Latino America, ci mancava il viaggiare in un paese dove riuscire a comunicare con le persone, fa la differenza, e per la terza volta torniamo nell’amato Messico.
Buttiamo i bambini, eccitatissimi, giù dal letto alle quattro di mattina e iniziamo il lungo viaggio: Torino-Francoforte-Los Angeles.
Il volo di andata assomiglia più ad un survival, Ali parte con 38,5 di febbre, Milo è sveglissimo e stanchissimo … ci ripromettiamo di non viaggiare più con un volo diurno così luuuungo.

Dopo tre giorni è ora di rimetterci in viaggio, non abbiamo nulla di prenotato, studiamo l’itinerario giorno per giorno e decidiamo di provare ad andare ad avvistare le famose balene grigie che in questo periodo dell’anno affollano le tre lagune della Baja California dove vengono a riprodursi.
Optiamo per Bahia Magdalena che non ci fa deviare troppo dalla meta successiva, Loreto, ma decidiamo di scartare il porto delle principali escursioni e di dirigerci verso il nord della laguna al minuscolo villaggio di Lopez Mateos. Non riesco a non chiedere al nostro capitano se non ci son mai stati degli incidenti durante gli avvistamenti. Una volta sola, mi racconta, trent’anni prima, per colpa di un barcaiolo che non ha visto una balena e ha fatto una manovra sbagliata urtandone una che passando sotto ha fatto ribaltare la barca, ma per fortuna, ci ricorda, sono amiche dell’uomo.
Noi aguzziamo la vista speranzosi e in pochissimo tempo iniziamo ad avvistare a distanza il primo spruzzo e già urliamo di gioia. Sappiamo però che molte persone in queste lagune arrivano addirittura a toccarle, ci sembra impossibile e invece, entrando di qualche chilometro dentro la laguna, avvistiamo una mamma con il suo cucciolo di appena due settimane. Il capitano ci incita a mettere la mano nell’acqua scura per chiamare a noi il cucciolo, l’avviciniamo con un misto di speranza e timore e dopo poco eccolo lì che si fa accarezzare dalla mano di Pablo!
Gioca attorno alla barca per una decina di minuti attirato dai nostri schizzi e poi ci saluta con un’immagine che, ammetto, mi ha fatto scendere le lacrime, andando via a fianco alla sua mamma con un ultimo tuffo a due fuori dall’acqua.
Decidiamo, nonostante l’ora di tritare ancora qualche chilometro e arrivare per la sera alla cittadina di Loreto pensando di prenotare una sistemazione lungo la strada, ma abbiamo sottovalutato il deserto Messicano, per chilometri e chilometri solo cactus e nessunissimo segnale telefonico.
Arriviamo a Loreto, stanchi, affamati e senza stanza. Appena arrivati in città riusciamo a collegarci a booking.com che ci segnala pochissime strutture disponibili, invece avviene quello che anni fa pensavo impossibile. Loreto è una tranquilla cittadina con un centro storico molto bello e rilassante. I pittoreschi ristoranti che circondano la piazza sono tutti all’aperto, nonostante alcune sere non sia per niente caldo in questa stagione, ceniamo con i mariachi che ci rallegrano dedicandoci la canzone di Coco!
Ma la voglia di mare e relax ci spinge a ripartire, direzione nord verso Bahía Concepción, una delle mete più ambite del nostro progetto di viaggio.
La strada da Loreto alla Baja si incunea tra montagne e cactus, ma dopo qualche chilometro iniziano a spuntare lingue di sabbia e insenature perfette e iniziamo a sognare di avere con noi il nostro amato furgone.
Questa parte della Baja California è il paradiso dei Van Lifer!
Le spiagge sono popolate da camper e furgoni, americani che vengono qui a svernare per mesi in riva al mare. Tutto è consentito e in questa parte del Messico non percepiamo mai pericoli solo tanta quiete e libertà.
Altre spiagge hanno bellissime casette a pochi passi dall’acqua, alcune sono in vendita, fotografiamo qualche cartello di vendita a futura memoria ;-)
Una sera mentre sorseggiamo una cerveza in un ristorantino di sabbia affacciato sul mare assistiamo per la prima volta al fenomeno della “bioluminiscenza”, non avevamo ma visto niente di simile nei nostri viaggi. E’ stato come vedere un’aurora boreale nel mare, grazie alla presenza di microrganismi che al passare dell’onda si illuminano di luce verde fluorescente. Magia Pura!
Salutiamo Bahía Concepción con una certezza: un giorno prenderemo un furgone in California e scenderemo da queste parti con molto più tempo a disposizione per goderci appieno la sua natura selvaggia.
E’ giunta l’ora di rientrare, passiamo ancora un paio di giorni a La Paz, ora decisamente più tranquilla dopo i giorni di festa del carnevale. Ammiriamo i numerosi graffiti che scopriamo gironzolando per le sue strade, i buonissimi ristoranti e bar e ci godiamo ancora Playa Balandra con la sue acque basse perfette per fare giocare i bimbi mentre gustiamo il mango fresco servito in spiaggia (basta ricordarsi di chiederlo rigorosamente senza sale!).
Saltiamo, mio rammarico, l’escursione con gli squali balena e le nuotate coi leoni marini … saranno un altro buon motivo per tornare da queste parti, ma con un bimbo di un anno e mezzo proprio tutto tutto ancora non si riesce a fare ;-) 
Per spezzare il viaggio di rientro decidiamo di fare una sosta anche dall’altra parte della Baja verso l’oceano a Todos Santos, famosa per le sue onde da surf e per il celebre Hotel California.
Arriviamo giusto in tempo per un Margarita da sorseggiare al tramonto da un promontorio sul mare e mentre osserviamo il cielo cambiare colore ogni secondo guardiamo l’orizzonte in cerca di balene.
