E’ strano atterrare dall’altra parte del mondo e sentirsi a casa. Arrivare a Bangkok, girare ormai in scioltezza in cerca della guesthouse dell’ultimo viaggio e riconoscere le bancarelle preferite di pad thai a cui ormai, nel segno della globalizzazione, si sono aggiunti i chioschi di kebab e felafel.
E’ strano perche’ e’ la prima volta che torniamo qui dopo aver visto l’India e la nostra visione e’ cambiata. Sara’ la stagione secca che rende l’aria piu’ limpida e respirabile (siam anche riusciti a vedere il cielo blu!), ma me la ricordavo piu’ trafficata, piu’ caotica, piu’ rumorosa. Le citta’ indiane ormai ci hanno forgiato per qualsiasi viaggio :-).
Ci godiamo i primi giorni di relax,  in attesa dell’arrivo del mio zaino intercettato a Mosca, gironzolando per Khao San Road curiosando tra gli ultimi design di magliette. Ci spingiamo verso la zona moderna dei centri commerciali per scovare le tendenze cool della moda giovanile asiatica. Scopriamo negozi dal design stiloso, centri commerciali sorprendetemente moderni e accattivanti e un museo del design di recente apertura. Bangkok  ci conferma ad ogni viaggio di essere sempre piu’ una citta’ al centro delle tendenze asiatiche e non solo.
Recuperato lo zaino finalmente ci mettiamo in viaggio verso la Cambogia. Pulman, per i nostri standard, moderno e strade ben asfaltate in 5 ore ci portano al famigerato confine. Tutto procede per il meglio, otteniamo il visto con una piccola “mancia” di 5 dollari al poliziotto di turno.

Proviamo per qualche minuto a spiegargi qual e’ il vero prezzo del visto, ma capiamo in breve tempo che qui non siamo noi a dettar le regole e, sapendo che non conviene mai discutere con chi porta una divisa e tiene il tuo passaporto in mano, paghiamo, come tutti i turisti che transitano di qui, la piccola mazzetta.
Il primo sguardo sulla Cambogia ce lo offre Siam Rep al nostro arrivo di notte. Un caos di polvere, tuk tuk, motorini, guest house a buon prezzo e alberghi 5 stelle.  Un mix di bancarelle economiche e ristoranti di tendenza, bar che si fanno concorrenza con gli orari degli happy hour, musica disco/pop occidentale, negozi di souvenir dove il dollaro americano  e’ l’unita’ di misura  e le ultime tendenze in fatto di massaggi. Gia’ a Bangkok ci siamo sorpresi nell’osservare come i massaggi thai tradizionali ormai non bastino piu’, la nuova moda sono i fish massage. Piccole piscine posizionate a bordo strada, colme di pesciolini, dove infilare i propri piedi…non so voi cosa ne pensate, ma io patisco il solletico gia’ quando si avvicinano in mare e poi poveri pesciolini!

Siam Rep e’ la base per visitare i famosi templi di Angkor, simbolo della grandezza dell’impero Khmer. Ci dedichiamo due giorni con tuk tuk e bicicletta alla visita della meraviglia sotto un sole a dir poco cocente.

Come ogni volta che mi  accingo a visitare  una bellezza di cui tanto ho sentito parlare mi chiedo se superera’ le mie aspettative. Ma con i templi di Angkor non si puo’ non rimanere sorpresi.
L’immagine piu’ celebre del grande tempio di Angkor Wat e’ solo una piccola, anche se meravigliosa, parte. L’area archeleogica e’ grande una cinquantina di chilometri o forse piu’. Ogni tempio ci stupisce per la sua diversita’ stilistica e per il miscuglio di religione hindu’ e di buddismo.
Enormi palazzi che si affacciano su bacini d’acqua, un tempio con 38 torri scolpite ognuna con tre facce giganti per lato, grossi portali d’ingresso dove ora sfrecciano i tuk tuk carichi di turisti, bassorilievi di miti hindu’ e statue di Buddha.
In molti templi si osserva come la foresta si sia prepotentemente riappropriata del proprio terreno. Con alberi che abbracciano letteralmente la pietra, radici ormai radicate nelle strutture dei templi e pertanto intoccabili, ma che rendono la visita ancora piu’ affascinante, dando un assaggio di come dovevano essere le rovine al tempo delle prime scoperte, quando era la natura a farla da padrone.
Domani andremo in giro per le campagne cambogiane dove speriamo di sfuggire un po’ , per quanto possibile, dai soliti giri turistici ed entrare piu’ in contatto con la gente del posto.
Leggendo un po’ di storia cambogiana  in questi giorni non posso non pensare che mentre io nascevo trentanni fa, qui cadeva finalmente il regime di Pol Pot. Dopo anni di bombardamenti americani, regime distruttivo e conquista vietnamita, mancava ancora molto ad una situazione di pace. Non riesco a non pensarci quando mi chiedo quanti anni hanno le persone che incrociamo, quale destino diverso abbiamo avuto.

E poi guardo i bambini che affollano le rovine dei templi con i loro souvenir per turisti e  rimango colpita dalla loro incredibile bellezza e dai sorrisi, mischiati a qualche parola di italiano,  che ti regalano per un dollaro o poco piu’.
