Lo stato del Kerala, nel sud dell’India, e’ il primo governo comunista liberamente eletto al mondo. Uno stato in prevalenza cattolico dove alle numerose chiese si alternano le bandiere rosse appese ad ogni albero e alla faccia di Ghandi sulle magliette in vendita ai turisti, nel segno della massima globalizzazione, e’ affiancata quella di Che Guevara.
Qui il tasso di alfabetizzazione e’ del 91%, il piu’ alto di tutta l’India e le infrastrutture denotano un livello di qualita’ della vita decisamente superiore agli altri stati indiani.
Il turismo che si sta sviluppando sempre piu’ sui bellissimi canali navigabili aiuta non poco ad accrescere l’economia locale. Il libro “1,000 Places to see before you die” ritiene un giro sulle houseboat del Kerala una delle esperienze da non perdere.
E noi non abbiamo voluto farci sfuggire questa opportunita’.
Per pochi soldi, comparati con i costi europei, abbiamo affittato una bella e romantica barca dal tetto di paglia e bambu’ e passato un giorno e una notte da nababbi con marinaio e ottimo cuoco indiano al nostro servizio mentre lentamente scivolavamo attraverso i verdi canali ammirando piccoli villaggi, reti da pesca cinesi e piantagioni di riso.
Una giornata di totale relax e fuga dal frastuono delle citta’ indiane, un piccolo lusso nel nostro quotidiano viaggiare low budget.
Tra i canali e le localita’ di mare di turisti occidentali ne abbiamo visti parecchi, mentre nei nostri spostamenti tradizionali sui sfasciatissimi bus locali e’ difficile incontrare visi bianchi, solo indiani che in continuazione ci chiedono “What’s yuor name?” “Where are you from?” “Italia:Sonia Ghandi”… purtroppo andare oltre questo quotidiano scambio di battute e’ praticamente impossibile, dato il loro inglese stentato e la nostra ignoranza dei dialetti locali. Ci manca un po’ la facilita’ con cui riuscivamo a comunicare con la gente in Sud America.
I bambini, invece, impazziscono davanti alla macchina fotografica prendendo letteralmente d’assedio Davide e Pablo. Credo non esista altro paese al mondo dove sia cosi’ facile scattare fotografie alla gente del posto, appena vedono un obiettivo si mettono tutti in posa e ridono come dei matti a rivedersi sullo schermino chiedendo di scattargli foto a ripetizione.


Incominciamo ad ambientarci e a trovarci a nostro agio nel caos di questo strano paese mentre il nostro stomaco si abitua al pasto tradizionale, il thali, riso accompagnato da verdure e salse speziatissime, servito su una foglia di banana e mangiato con la mano destra (la sinistra e’ considerata impura) al modico prezzo di 20 rupie (circa 30 centesimi di euro).
Il costo della vita in India e’ veramente bassissimo comparato con gli standard europei, per questo molti occidentali decidono di trascorrervi mesi se non anni. Con dieci euro al giorno riusciamo a viaggiare, mangiare e dormire in maniera decorosa. Certo non immaginatevi grandi alberghi e pulman con aria condizionata, ma bus affolatissimi e stanze dove spesso non c’e’ una doccia vera e propria, ti riempi il tuo secchio e con un piccolo recipiente ti versi l’acqua addosso, ma ci si abitua in fretta.
Dopo il Kerala ci stiamo spostando lentamente verso nord, passando tra montagne, piantagioni di te’, il palazzo del Maraja’ e affascinanti templi indu’.
Il mare pero’ ci richiama, prossima tappa le spiagge di Goa, ci attendono 12 ore di pulman notturno per andare a vedere cos’e’ rimasto del fascino che ha portato tanti hippy negli anni ’70.
