Per Natale abbiamo deciso di farci un regalo: licenziarci!!!
Il secondo regalo ha deciso di farcelo il nostro amico Matteo che verra’ a trovarci tra qualche giorno per viaggiare con noi in Nuova Zelanda.
Ebbene si’, dopo tre mesi era ora di rimetterci in movimento, abbiamo risparmiato il sufficiente per girare la terra di mezzo e per una tappa successiva, prima del rientro a casa, in ….. India!!!
Nelle ultime settimane abbiamo fatto i lavori piu’ svariati: dalle solite serate al ristorante, ai giardinieri, camerieri in un bar molto busy lungomare, creazione di un sitino web www.sheeperino.co.nz per ringraziare dell’infinita ospitalita’ i nostri amici, Paola e Francesco, che tentano di istruire i Kiwi al gusto di altri formaggi oltre al cheddar :-) e per finire due settimane di pioggia :-( e di raccolta mirtilli per una splendida famiglia neozelandese.
La raccolta dei mirtilli e’ stata sicuramente piu’ facile del flower picking, niente distinzioni sessuali tra le piante, bisognava solo prestare attenzione alle impercettibili sfumature di colore per cogliere i mirtilli in fase di maturazione. Ma dobbiamo ammettere che questa volta qualche miglia ce la siamo mangiata (un mirtillo un miglio, un mirtillo un miglio….gnam) :-)
E fiinalmente, dopo mesi, siamo riusciti a lavorare per una famiglia neozelandese (basta italiani, indiani, iraniani!!!) ed e’ stata un’esperienza splendida.


I Somerfield coltivano piccoli frutti (fragole, mirtilli, lamponi, more…) da generazioni, nonne, figli, nipotini. Avreste dovuto vedere in questi giorni, sotto Natale, la fila di macchine per venire a comprare la loro frutta! Loro, furbissimi, praticano il pick your own, ovvero la gente viene, si raccoglie le proprie fragole e poi paga!! Niente male come risparmio di manodopera.
Ogni giorno ci hanno istruito sulle diverse e numerosissime varieta’ di “berry”, ci hanno rimpinzato con omaggi di frutta e marmellate, ci hanno offerto te’, torte e sorrisi ad ogni buona occasione, ci hanno preparato un itinerario di viaggio per l’isola del sud e ci hanno gia’ invitato a cena per quando ripasseremo da queste parti. Noi, nel nostro piccolo, abbiamo contraccambiato con un pranzetto nei campi a base di pane fritto.
Raccogliere mirtilli non ci avra’ fatto diventare ricchi, ma lavorare per i Somerfield ha sicuramente arricchito la nostra esperienza di viaggio/lavoro in questa terra. Ci siamo salutati oggi con un abbraccio veramente commovente e le braccia cariche di ottima frutta per noi!
Ora siamo in partenza, prima tappa un ritorno ad Auckland da Niky e Julian, la nostra famiglia kiwi adottiva che ci aspetta per Natale. Possiamo ben immaginare tutti i manicaretti che ci perderemo in quel di Torino, ma ci consoleremo con un buon risotto Acquerello comprato in un negozietto da queste parti.
E’ strano un Natale senza neve, il sole splende, abbiamo rimesso il costume e tra un mirtillo e l’altro fatto il primo tuffo in questa parte di oceano…ed e’ dicembre :-)

  1. …pensare che papà anni fa abbia “inventato” un packaging innovativo per commercializzare il riso che coltivava già suo padre… pensare che ora suo fratello con nostro cugino proseguano l’opera che da due generazioni ci siamo in qualche modo rimbalzati… pensarvi così lontani ma sapere che vi siete comprati un mezzo chilo di riso del nostro amato piemonte… questa cosa mi mette un pochino i brividi… a voi due no?!   5. Ehilà, che farete di bello a capodanno? Qui forse si fiaccola, c’è un sacco di neve bellissima, che forse farete ancora in tempo a godervi un po’. E lì? Bagno di mezzanotte??? Di sicuro quando noi inizieremo a festeggiare voi sarete ancora a smaltire i postumi della prima/ultima sbornia dell’anno ;o))
