Mentre i giovani neozelandesi fuggono dalla loro terra in cerca di lavoro all’estero, la fuga dei cervelli come la chiamano qua, gli europei vi arrivano per donare le proprie braccia all’agricultura locale e racimolare denaro per i propri viaggi.
E cosi’ si finisce a fare i lavori che i Kiwi non vogliono piu’ fare, tra viaggiatori di altri paesi e immigrati indiani, pakistani, sudamericani. La differenza sostanziale e’ che tra i viaggiatori c’e’ chi lavora per comprarsi una tavola da surf o chi, come noi, per racimolare miglia aeree, loro, invece, per mandare i soldi alla propria famiglia.
Qualcuno di questi immigrati e’ qui da anni, ha la cittadinanza neozelandese e gestisce il grande flusso di lavoratori per la stagione di raccolta frutta.
Noi, nella nostra ricerca di un lavoro diurno, ci siamo imbattuti in Hamid.
Hamid, di origine iraniana, ma con identita’ differenti (ci sono quelli che lo conoscono come George, chi come Steve o come un suo alter ego Mike) di mestiere fa il contractor: colui che si occupa di trovare i lavoratori da spedire nei vari frutteti.
I contractor, purtroppo, troppo spesso, sono figure poco chiare che sfruttano il grosso traffico di persone richieste per le stagioni di raccolta.
Con Hamid intratteniamo tutti i giorni una fitta corrispondenza via essemmesse per scoprire, di volta in volta, non prima delle dieci di sera, in quale piantagione lavoreremo il giorno seguente.
Per queste prime due settimane il nostro lavoro e’ stato il flower picking, ovvero la raccolta dei fiori maschi del kiwi da cui si estrae il polline per l’impollinazione artificiale.
Lavoriamo a cottimo, pagati a chilo! Vi siete mai chiesti quanto puo’ pesare un fiore?!? Poco ve lo assicuriamo. Il lavoro non e’ cosi’ semplice come si puo’ pensare, bisogna prendere solo i fiori maschi, non troppo aperti ne’ troppo chiusi, un solo fiore femmina puo’ causare l’annullamento di tutta la borsa, ma non e’ cosi’ facile distinguere il sesso di una pianta e il lavoro di tutta una giornata puo’ andare perso per colpa di una femmina!! Per non parlare delle api che giustamente vorrebbero fare il loro lavoro in pace e non essere disturbate da mani invasive.


Ci torna in mente il film “La classe operaia va in paradiso” dove Gian Maria Volonte’ lavorava a cottimo in fabbrica e, per trovare un minimo di stimolo, associava “Un pezzo un culo, un pezzo un culo”. Noi abbiamo la fortuna di non dover lavorare per la sopravvivenza come tanti che lavorano in fabbrica, ma per incentivarci, pensiamo:” Un fiore un miglio, un fiore un miglio”.
La sveglia e’ all’alba tutti i giorni e alla sera si continua nel ristorante (scusate l’assenza prolungata da internet, ma dobbiamo attendere la pioggia per avere delle ore libere). La raccolta ha ritmi folli, velocissimi, ma lavorare con il nasu all’insu’ verso il cielo primaverile, la nostra musica che si diffonde nel campo, la pausa pranzo spaparanzati al sole, il pensiero verso nuove mete da esplorare, ci fa andare avanti felici giorno dopo giorno dopo giorno.
